The Questions That Bring Us Back
Updated: 2 days ago
Sometimes, we spend so much time looking for answers that we forget to question the questions themselves. Why isn't this enough? Why am I not further along? Why doesn't this feel the way I thought it would?
We ask these questions almost automatically, often without realising how much they shape the way we see our lives. And sometimes, a small shift in perspective can open up an entirely different experience.
What if, instead of asking why we aren't receiving enough love, we asked:
How can I fully receive the love that is here?
What if, instead of worrying about whether we're doing enough, we wondered:
How can I be more present with the people in front of me?
And what if, instead of trying to anticipate every outcome, we allowed ourselves to ask:
Can I let this surprise me?
These questions don't deny the things that are missing, the things that hurt, or the things we'd genuinely like to change. They just make room for something else to exist alongside them.
Because sometimes, we become so focused on what isn't happening that we struggle to see what is. We get caught up in the distance between where we are and where we think we should be, and we miss the life unfolding in the space between.
A different question doesn't magically change our circumstances. But it can change where we place our attention. What we become available to notice. What we allow ourselves to feel.
It can bring us back from the life we're trying to figure out and into the one we're actually living.
And maybe that's where presence begins.
Not in having everything figured out.
Not in finding the perfect answer.
Not even in feeling entirely at peace with where we are.
Sometimes, all presence asks of us is a little curiosity. A willingness to loosen our grip on the story we've been telling ourselves and consider another possibility.
To pause.
To ask a different question.
And to see what becomes possible when we do.
Not answers, necessarily. Just better questions.
